Have you ever felt super strong?

When people compete to be the strongest person in the world, they make lots of funny poses, showing off all their muscles! Can you make some of those faces now? Maybe if you feel brave enough, ask an adult to take a picture of your funny pose and

Have you ever managed to face something scary and actually found you could be brave? That's what David discovered in our bible story today.

  • Find 5 small rocks and then 1 that is a bit bigger.
  • Print a big G on the bigger rock and then spell out D A V I D on the small rocks. Or you can just use different coloured marbles.
  • On a smooth floor - a patio might be good if it’s warm outside – place some tape to make a square, or draw one with chalk if you're outside.
  • Place the G stone in the middle of it and then take turns sliding the David rocks (or marbles) until you have pushed Goliath out of the square! Make sure you slide rather than throw 😊

  • Goliath was known as a champion among the Philistines, a lot of the reason being because he was 'six cubits and a span'. In today's terms, that means he was nearly 10 feet tall! Do you know how tall you are?
  • Goliath's armour weighed 125 pounds! That's more than an average 10 year old child! And just the tip of his spear weighed 15 pounds - that's 15 bags of sugar! He even had to have someone hold his shield and walk ahead of him. I'm not sure I'd be brave enough to fight him. What things do you find hard to be brave about?
  • David was the only one who was willing to fight Goliath. King Saul wanted to dress him up in armour to protect him, but David took it off. What did he use to fight Goliath instead?
  • Do you think Goliath was more surprised or angry to see a young man (the bible describes him as little more than a boy) come and challenge him?
  • How did David end up defeating Goliath?

How can we know for sure that David knew God?

My God's the king of the giants
My God's the king of the lions
My God's the king of the creatures of the deep
My God's the king of me

Have you heard the story about my friend King Dave?
Wouldn't let the giant stand in his way
He said, "Hand me my sling 'cause he's not that tall"
"My God is bigger, and I'll watch him fall"

My God's the king of the giants
My God's the king of the lions
My God's the king of the creatures of the deep
My God's the king of me

Have you heard the one about this guy called Dan?
Yes, he was a mighty holy praying man
They said, "Throw him to the den of the scary beasts"
But God saved our hero from the lion's teeth

My God's the king of the giants
My God's the king of the lions
My God's the king of the creatures of the deep
My God's the king of me

This is more than history
He will do the same for me
Like Jonah and the whale at sea
When I'm lost and afraid, all alone in the dark
You're with me
Oh, You're with me

My God's the king of the giants
My God's the king of the lions
My God's the king of the creatures of the deep
My God's the king of me

My God's the king of the giants
My God's the king of the lions
My God's the king of the creatures of the deep
My God's the king of me
My God's the king of me

Prayer is the special word we use to describe talking to God. God wants us to talk to him.

David was sure of God's help and protection, and we can also be sure God loves us and cares for us. He especially loves to hear from us, and we call that talking to God 'prayer'. Try the one here:

Dear God,
Thank you for the story of faith that is shown in David's victory over Goliath.
We thank you that the battle was won, not by muscle strength but by you working through David.
We pray that we would have faith like David and know that you are with us in good times and in difficult times.
Help us to rely on you more each day.
Amen

If you want to, you can talk to God about the good or difficult times you might be going through.

Rock Bag

Cut out the shape of a bag from some coloured card, then stick on 5 'rocks' in felt or other material. Finish with the verse from the bible: "The battle is the Lord's" 1 Samuel 17:47

Cookies

Make a batch of 'stone' cookies and decorate them however you'd like to.
